This submission earned young director Luke Mason first prize in the film category at this year's Interpret Durban event. The short film follows the poignant, humorous, grimy and sometimes hallucinogenic journey of a ten-rand note in the big city. We're loving how the scenes play so seamlessly alongside the soundtrack, which, by the way, is Coals of Juniper's 'Insomnic.'

Like it's 1955 again
Ernst Eloff, co-founder of Mid-Century Modern, now works as an independent buyer and collector of mid-century furniture pieces. His studio apartment in Gardens doubles as a temporary showroom where recognisable icons of the period make for quirky living room accents. Chrome pendant ceiling lights and high-backed siesta lounge chairs (circa 1970) might feature comfortably in grainy pre-millenium home video or science fiction film set, yet they're invading contemporary homes, offices and doctors' rooms like it's 1955 again.
Pictured left: Ernst dons a pair of thrift-shop opera-glasses. Move over, Ray Ban.
Above, left to right: Arne Jacobsen's original 'Egg Chair;' the bent-steel 'Wassily Chair' by Marcel Breuer.

HOW TO: The 'Serve Me Up' Wall Clock
To make this charming (but not chiming) timepiece, you will need the following:
- Old serving tray, Milnerton Market, bartered down to 20 bucks.
- Two silver spoons, R10 for two, sold by creepy silversmith at same market.
- Wooden numbers (spray-paint optional)
- A drill (and someone handy to use it)
- A good strong mechanism

PREVIEW: 'Bricolage'
Dalene Plasket lives by a simple
mantra: don’t buy anything new when you can make it yourself. Her frugality shows
in the way she talks about her home. She’s designed the place around the land,
using and reusing wherever she can. There is little sense of urban imposition. In
fact, that Miriam Makeba song about ground comes to mind. Dalene’s own piece of
ground is a retreat for everyone who steps on it. While her husband Lester may
be in the demolition business, the joy of creating things is a mutual passion.
Check out 'Our Own Piece of Ground' in the upcoming issue of Magpie for tips on how to live a little more simply, featuring Dalene's top 10 ways to greenify your home as well as excellent home DIY tutorials from her portfolio.

HOW TO: Salt Your Own Bokkoms
Bokkoms, affectionately known as fish biltong, is a West Coast delicacy and a commonplace sight along the coast. Fishing micro-economies like Paternoster rely on the bokkom trade. Hundreds of them can be seen hanging out to dry in silver bouquets, slowly preserving in the hot Cape wind. The distinctly fishy smell and unsophisticated preparation method make bokkoms the perfect pescatarian addition to any local dish. Pan-fry between thick slices of farm bread, spread on toast garnished with a coriander, tomato and corn relish, or simply eat them as they are with a side of black coffee and apricot jam.
Here's how to to prepare your own bokkoms the West Coast way:
